Many of Olsztyn's main attractions and historical sites are located in or around the city centre, making it easy for visitors to explore the city's vibrant heart, where history intertwines with nature and every moment is an opportunity to unwind and uncover something new.

Olsztyn - a city with 672 years of heritage

The history of Olsztyn dates back to 1353, when the Warmian Chapter began building a castle and founded a settlement, which was soon granted town rights in the fourteenth century. The city's development during this period established its significance as a regional hub, with historic buildings such as the Old Town Hall and Mayor's House dating back to the fourteenth century. Over the following centuries, Olsztyn served as an important administrative and commercial centre in the region. The city is also associated with the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus - the most famous resident of the local castle. Not only did he conduct astronomical observations, he also defended Olsztyn against the Teutonic Knights' invasions, leaving a lasting mark on the city's history.

Today, Olsztyn combines its rich heritage with modernity, inviting you to discover its monuments, culture and unique atmosphere.

2. High Gate (Upper Gate) and the Old and New Town Halls.

The High Gate, also known as the Upper Gate, is the only surviving part of Olsztyn’s medieval defensive walls. Erected in the 14th century, it served as the main entrance to the city and was an important part of the fortification system. The other two gates—the Lower Gate and the Mill Gate—did not stand the test of time and disappeared from the urban landscape over the centuries. This makes it all the more worth appreciating that the High Gate has been preserved in its original form and is still impressive today for its Gothic architecture. The High Gate is about 23 metres high and is a characteristic landmark on the city map. Passing under it, you enter directly into Olsztyn’s Old Town—full of historic monuments, charming streets, and atmospheric cafés. It is a symbolic “gateway” to the historic heart of Olsztyn.

Nearby, you will find the historic city hall, a beautiful example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, which served as the seat of local government and civil registrations. The new town hall, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, is another important administrative and cultural landmark, currently housing municipal offices and standing as a monument to the city's development.

Throughout the year, Castle Park hosts various cultural events and open-air concerts, adding to its lively and welcoming atmosphere. Its central location means you’re never far from Olsztyn’s main attractions—the old town hall, the bustling town square, and the impressive Upper Gate, a massive Gothic structure that marks the entrance to the old town.

Whether you’re drawn by the park’s natural beauty, its proximity to the city’s historical landmarks, or the chance to experience local cultural events, Castle Park is an essential stop on any visit to Olsztyn. Enjoy the serene river views, explore the park’s hidden corners, and immerse yourself in the unique charm that makes this park a highlight of the city.
