Car Rental insurance cost in Poland - What to expect before You book?

Travelling around Poland by car is a great way to explore the country at your own pace — whether you’re planning a weekend in Poland, a spontaneous City Break, or a longer road trip. From the atmospheric streets of Krakow, straight from the airport, through scenic coastal routes, to winding mountain roads, having your own car gives you true freedom and independence. However, before you set off on your journey with Kaizen Rent, it’s worth taking a moment to understand how rental car insurance works and what protection options are available to make your trip stress-free.

Don't worry — it's all simpler than it might seem.

Is insurance at a rental company a necessity or just an extra?

One of the first questions that arise when renting a car is whether it is worth purchasing additional insurance. All rental prices at Kaizen Rent (short-term, medium-term, and long-term rental) include basic comprehensive insurance and third-party liability insurance and 24-hour Assistance.

As the owner of the vehicle, the rental company is obliged to provide adequate insurance cover for every car available in its offer. In Poland, third-party liability insurance is the only compulsory motor insurance policy for every motor vehicle, regardless of the owner.

Comprehensive car insurance – is it standard at rental companies?

Third-party liability insurance is basic insurance coverage, while comprehensive insurance is an extension of it. In the case of car rental companies, comprehensive insurance is usually standard. Why? It's simple – it allows car rental companies to protect their assets. Depending on the terms of the policy, the insurance may cover, among other things, damage caused by the driver, theft of the vehicle or damage resulting from natural disasters.

When you hire a car, you benefit from its breakdown cover. However, you are not exempt from full liability for any damage caused. You can only be exempt from this liability if you purchase additional SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) cover from the rental company.

What is an excess in rent a car insurance?

Even with comprehensive insurance and third-party liability, renting a car does not make you magically protected from accidents or unforeseen events. It’s important to ask yourself: what happens if the rental car is damaged, and who will cover the costs?

And here we have the "but"

This is where the concept of an excess comes in – it is the amount the renter is required to pay out of pocket in the event of a claim. The insurance covers the remaining cost. The size of the excess depends on the rental agreement and the type of vehicle, so it’s always worth checking the exact terms before signing the contract to understand what you might be liable for in different situations.

What are the benefits of reducing the excess?

Choosing an excess reduction option means real financial peace of mind in situations where the unexpected happens. If you are involved in a road collision while driving a rental car – even if you are at fault – this solution helps you avoid high out-of-pocket costs. Simply put, it’s a smart precaution that can really pay off.

It is especially worth considering when driving in an unfamiliar city. New traffic rules, unknown roads or heavy traffic increase the risk of small mistakes, and even a minor collision can result in significant expenses without excess reduction.

Another situation where excess reduction proves invaluable is damage with no identifiable party at fault. This may include, for example, a scratch in a car park with no monitoring, where it is impossible to determine who caused the damage – even if the incident is reported to the police. With excess reduction, you don’t have to worry about additional charges in such cases.

What does the cost of excess reduction depend on, and how much does it cost?

The price of the excess reduction option depends primarily on the vehicle class. The higher the class of the car, the higher the cost of reducing the excess. This is a natural result of the higher value and repair costs of premium vehicles.

Even so, it’s an option well worth considering, as it effectively protects your deposit (security deposit). In the event of damage, rental companies may deduct funds from the deposit to cover repair costs – such as scratched paintwork, a dented fender, or other minor damage.

If you choose excess reduction, the rental company will not charge you for the repair of the vehicle, allowing you to return the car without worrying about unexpected financial consequences.

Additional SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) – Comfort or Comfort Plus package

For even greater peace of mind, Kaizen Rent offers additional SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver): Comfort or Comfort Plus package. These options are designed to minimize your financial responsibility and make your car rental experience as stress-free as possible.

The Comfort package reduces your financial liability in the event of damage, offering extra protection beyond standard insurance coverage. It’s a great choice for drivers who want added security while keeping rental costs balanced.

The Comfort Plus package provides the highest level of protection, significantly limiting or fully eliminating your financial responsibility for most types of damage. With Comfort Plus, you can travel with confidence, knowing your deposit is protected and unexpected situations won’t disrupt your plans.

Both packages are ideal for driving in unfamiliar areas, longer trips, or simply for anyone who values comfort, safety, and full control over rental costs.

When is rental car insurance not valid?

The fact that a rental car is insured does not always mean that the driver is fully covered. There are situations in which comprehensive insurance, third-party liability insurance, or the Comfort or Comfort Plus protection package do not cover damage, and financial liability may fall entirely on the person driving the vehicle.

Such cases include situations where the driver:

  1. intentionally caused damage or drove the vehicle while intoxicated, under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances;
  2. did not have a valid driving licence, i.e. drove the car without a valid driving licence;
  3. came into possession of the vehicle as a result of a crime, e.g. theft;
  4. left the scene of a collision or accident without informing the rental company or the relevant services.

In such cases, the insurer will pay compensation to the injured parties, protecting their interests. However, it may later seek reimbursement of the costs incurred from the driver who caused the damage, covering the entire amount of compensation – even if the renter had purchased additional insurance packages or excess waiver.

That is why it is so important to follow safety rules and traffic regulations, have a valid driving licence and drive responsibly – it is not only a matter of financial protection, but also the safety of you and other road users.

Your responsibility in everyday driving

Responsibility for a hired car is not only about the provisions of the contract and the scope of insurance, but above all about everyday decisions made on the road.

  • Care for the vehicle – regular refuelling in accordance with the terms of the contract, checking the fuel level, keeping the car clean and paying attention to its basic technical condition.
  • Safe driving – obeying traffic regulations is the best way to protect yourself, your passengers and the rented car.
  • Reporting damage and faults – any scratches, collisions or breakdowns should be reported immediately to the rental company to avoid misunderstandings and additional costs.
  • Your vigilance and responsible approach will ensure that your journey is smooth and stress-free, and that the car is returned in perfect condition.

Can I take out additional insurance during the rental period?

If you have changed your mind and would like to purchase additional vehicle protection SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver), e.g. Comfort Plus, please let us know. We will arrange another meeting at our nearest branch, during which we will inspect the vehicle again and draw up a new document – a vehicle acceptance report. Once the payment has been made, the additional insurance will be valid for the purchased period.

Do I need to pay a deposit if I have purchased the Comfort Plus Package? Is a deposit always mandatory?

Yes, a deposit is always required. However, you can reduce it to PLN 500 or even PLN 1, depending on the vehicle class, by purchasing the Comfort Package or Comfort Plus Package. The package not only reduces the deposit, but also provides full protection against liability for any damage.

What should I do if I cause damage to the hired car that was not my fault?

Ask the person responsible for the accident for the necessary information, including their vehicle registration number. In the event of the police arriving, we will require information regarding their origin.

If the police were not called, you will need to obtain the following from the person responsible for the accident:

  • a statement describing the incident,
  • she or he valid driver's license
  • she or insurance policy number.

Am I liable for damage to a hired car?

Many people wonder whether they are liable for damage caused while renting a car and to what extent. The answer depends on several factors:

  1. Damage not caused by you – if another driver caused the damage and the repair is covered by the perpetrator's civil liability insurance, you are not liable.
  2. Damage caused by you – in this case, the extent of your liability depends on the type of damage and the terms and conditions of the car rental.
  3. Comfort or Comfort Plus package – purchasing a package reduces your financial liability and protects you from the costs of most damage, depending on the package you purchase.
